I greet other motorcyclists, with a wave. It is usually done with a downward-back motion, because it is just too ackward to try and raise the arm up into a strong wind stream.
In all of the times that us cyclists, exchanged this manor of wave, the intention was not to warn someone of a policeman up ahead.
Note: in heavey motorcycle traffic I quit waving. Also it does not pay to wave to an unhelmeted cyclist, (where I live) because they are all "Harley bikers" and do not recognize us helmeted cyclists!
